BOSS project - ERASMUS+ Sport

Work package 1 results

(Project supported by ENOS)

The Erasmus plus funded project "Benefit of Outdoor Sports for Society" (BOSS) is moving forward. During the first year, ENOS partners from different European countries have worked together to gather the benefits of outdoor sports to society.

After the screening of 17,560 studies a final selection of 133 studies was identified and chosen for data extraction. This evidence base includes studies in a range of languages and from a large variety of backgrounds and sources. Relevant data has been extracted and translated into English.

Therefore, the first work package provides insights in the broad range of benefits that can be accrued from outdoor sports, including benefits in the field of physical and mental health and wellbeing, education and lifelong learning, active citizenship and crime reduction.

Further information and the extracted information of studies can be followed on the BOSS website :

ENOS was present in March at the EU Sport Forum in Sofia, where the new Eurobarometer on sport and physical activity was presented. Bad news: the proportion of people who say they never practice or play sports has increased from 42% to 46% between 2014 and 2017.With an increasingly urban and sedentary population in Europe, we have the challenge of getting people moving and reconnecting with nature.

Outdoor sports are definitively a possible answer and ENOS works for that !

  ENOS now member of ISCA

ENOS joined the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) which is a global platform open to organisations working within the field of sport for all, recreational sports and physical activity.

ISCA’s philosophy is that sport is not just about competition and exercise, but also involves having a good time and making friends. Moreover, sport regulates social behaviour and creates a feeling of belonging – which in turn leads to a strengthening of democracy.

ISCA was created with the purpose of:

  • supporting cross-border understanding through sport and culture
  • promoting sport as a bearer of cultural identity
  • encouraging the broadest possible participation in sports and cultural activities for affiliated members

Rurality and Outdoor sports

ENOS signed recently a communication of the European Countryside Movement to answer to the European Commission Communication about the future of Food and Farming.

ENOS think that outdoor sports are a lever for the development of rural areas. In many areas these activities are part of tourism strategies with employment and economy benefits. But beyond that, outdoor sports can:

  •  encourage people to be active in contact with nature
  •  discover and enhance landscapes
  •  develop an environmental awareness- educate young people to know and love nature
  •  develop inexpensive equipment open to all
  •  reconnect urban and rural areas

The future of rural development financing is essential and ENOS is working with the European Countryside Movement (ECM) to defend it.
