ROUTES Project Officially Launched with Kick-off Meeting Bringing Together European Partners
The ROUTES project (Responsible Overall Use of Trails through a framework for a European Standard), co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme, officially launched in February 2026 with a Kick-off Meeting bringing together partners from across Europe.
This first meeting marked the beginning of a collaborative journey to support a stronger, clearer and more responsible future for trails across Europe. Over the coming years, from 2026 to 2029, the project will focus on improving trail grading, management and information across outdoor sports.
During the Kick-off Meeting, partners aligned on the project’s objectives, structure and upcoming activities, while also strengthening collaboration across the consortium. Discussions highlighted the importance of developing a shared European approach that responds to current challenges, including increasing pressure on trails, the need for clearer information for users, and the importance of sustainability and inclusion.

ROUTES aims to develop a common framework that will support stakeholders across Europe in improving the way trails are designed, managed and communicated. The project will focus on:
- Enhancing the clarity and reliability of trail information
- Supporting sustainable and responsible trail management practices
- Promoting accessibility and inclusion
- Strengthening cooperation across sectors
As outdoor participation continues to grow, trails play an increasingly important role in connecting people, communities and natural environments. Ensuring their quality, safety and sustainability is therefore essential for the future of outdoor activities in Europe.
The project brings together a diverse consortium of organisations with expertise in outdoor sports, trail management and environmental governance. The European Network of Outdoor Sports (ENOS) leads Work Package 5 on impact assessment and dissemination, ensuring that project results are visible, accessible and effectively shared across Europe.
ROUTES represents an important step towards a more coordinated and responsible approach to trail use, contributing to the long-term sustainability of natural environments while enhancing the outdoor experience for all.
